Ananiasz Zajączkowski’s Contribution to Research on the Cultural Heritage of the Polish Tatars

Abstract
The article discusses the significance of Ananiasz Zajączkowski’s research on the literary heritage of the Polish Tatars. It focuses on the Turkologist’s analysis of the chamaił manuscript from the collection of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the University of Warsaw (1951) and his earlier work Studia nad językiem staroosmańskim (1937). The author presents Zajączkowski’s contribution to identifying the multilingual and multilayered nature of the Tatar manuscript and highlights his findings regarding its script, language, and content. The article also examines the critical edition of Cevāhirü’l-Esdāf, noting that the text published by Zajączkowski may have served as a source for the Tatar tefsir – the first translation of the Qur’an into a Slavic language. A key conclusion is that contemporary scholarship confirms the continuing relevance of this Karaim scholar’s findings and the fundamental importance of his work for Oriental and kitabistic studies.

The Tatar Tefsir in the Context of Biblical and Qur’anic Interpretations (Berlin 2018), Leksyka północnokresowa w tefsirze Tatarów Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego. Zapożyczenia niesłowiańskie (Toruń, 2024) i krytycznej edycji tefsiru Tatarów polskich (Toruń, 2022). Od 2025 roku pełni funkcję przewodniczącej Międzynarodowej Komisji Badań Kitabistycznych, skupiającej przedstawicieli z kilku krajów.
